KL stocks end 0.8pc higher (26.03.2009)

MALAYSIAN shares closed up 0.80 per cent today as foreign funds snapped up banking and construction blue chips, dealers said.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index gained 6.66 points to 885.47, with advancers outpacing decliners 339 to 128.

Regional markets posted strong gains today with the Hang Seng Index closing 486.87 points up to 14,108.98, and the Nikkei Index rising 156.34 points to 8,636.33.

The Kospi Index increased 14.78 points to 1,243.8 and the Straits Times Index gained 67.11 points to 1,758.79.

Dealers said the Asian market rose today on optimism that the US economy was showing signs of recovery following reports of unexpected growth in durable-goods orders and new-home sales in the US.

The US government yesterday reported a 3.4 per cent increase in demand for longer lasting products in February and a 4.7 per cent gain in new-home purchase.

At Bursa Malaysia, the Industrial Index rose 4.88 points to close at 2,130.50, the Plantation Index gained 19.83 points to 4,583.22 and the Finance Index jumped 47.25 points to 6,587.88.

The FBMEmas rose 57.24 points to 5,780.49, the FBM30 increased 49.46 points to 5,679.50, the FBM2BRD climbed 28.23 points to 3,915.23 and the FBMMesdaq jumped 82.38 points to 3,028.69. - Agencies
