Najib To Brief New York Fund Managers On Malaysia's Strong Fundamentals

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Monday he will be bringing "good news" to New York fund managers about the country when he makes a trip there to attend the United Nations General Assembly session.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said Malaysia has strong fundamentals to move the economy and that it was just being overshadowed by the political stories that have received wide coverage from the media.

"I'm scheduled to meet fund managers there. They want to talk to me and I need to talk to them as well. There are very strong fundamentals and good governance here.

"It is a good story to tell them (but) it is being overshadowed by political news that has been given prominence by the press," he told reporters after a briefing by the Finance Ministry, Bank Negara and other financial institutions.

Asked about his new portfolio after switching from the Defence Ministry, Najib said it was very challenging but would do his best to serve.

"It's very challenging. I will try my best. I will also need help from the press to send the right message, otherwise it will impact the economy," he said.

However, Najib is not in a hurry to implement anything.

"I'm not in a hurry. I will make a series of announcements. We will take it step by step. I don't want to over promise and under deliver," he said, adding that he hoped to meet media editors as well.

He said this goal was to ensure that the economy's management was on the right track and has a very clear sense of direction.

"It will be a continuation of what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been doing and make sure we deliver all our promises to the people,” said Najib who swapped portfolios with Abdullah on Wednesday.

Among Najib's priorities are to ensure good growth, low inflation, low unemployment, more disposable income, strengthening of the economy and institutions, good governance and efficient monitoring system.

Asked about the country's interest rate, he said, it was not his position to talk about it.

"Talk to the central bank governor. It is a very sensitive subject. Interest rate remains unchanged. Don't speculate about it," he added.

Why he want to brief New York fund managers?

If our country still required 30% to be given to M*l*y, no fund managers will come in.
